Necessary and sufficient observability conditions for residual estimates

Establish observability-type conditions that are necessary and sufficient for the residual estimate associated with the mixed-boundary wave equation generator, namely \(\| (\lambda i+D_M)w\|_2\gtrsim p(\lambda)\|w\|_2\) for high frequencies and wave states whose displacement trace vanishes on the interface, to hold.

Background

The paper studies decay of the semigroup generated by a coupled wave-heat system on adjacent Lipschitz wave and heat domains. Through a reduction argument, residual estimates for the coupled generator are related to residual estimates for the mixed-boundary wave equation generator DMD_M on the wave domain.

The paper proves that observability in time, including control of the wave domain by the heat domain, is sufficient to obtain a uniform residual bound and consequently polynomial decay. However, it does not characterize when such observability conditions are also necessary. The unresolved problem is therefore to identify observability-type criteria equivalent to the residual estimate governing polynomial decay.

References

In future work, we aim to find observability-type conditions which are necessary and sufficient for the sought after residual estimate~eq:polynomialboundforD to hold.

The quantitative saddle-network exclusion hypothesis is not established in this work. In particular, a measure-zero property of the saddle skeleton does not by itself yield the required uniform estimate, and fixed-graph acyclicity does not provide uniform control when the relevant direction and microlocal network vary along the eigensequence. Establishing the required uniform exact-spectral control of the saddle/conic network would remove the additional hypothesis and extend the mixed-sector theorem from the admissible class to arbitrary nonempty open observation sets.
