Background

Multiple lines of evidence support the existence of dark matter, yet its particle nature is unknown. Many candidates are proposed, including ultralight scalar (wave-like) dark matter with distinctive cosmological and laboratory signatures.

This work studies a scenario where an ultralight scalar couples to sterile neutrinos, affecting the evolution and potential detection of the cosmic neutrino background. Although such analyses probe specific models and parameter spaces, the overarching question—what dark matter is—remains open.

The origin of neutrino masses and the nature of dark matter constitute, at present, the two main open questions in our understanding of the Universe.
