Existence of present-day analog stars to J0931+0038 in large surveys

Identify stars in APOGEE DR17 or other large spectroscopic surveys that are analogues of 2MASS J09311004+0038042 (J0931+0038), sharing similar kinematics and diagnostic abundance ratios (e.g., low [Al/Mg]), to establish whether this rare nucleosynthetic signature recurs in the Milky Way.

Background

To test whether the unusual nucleosynthetic signature is unique or part of a rare class, the authors searched APOGEE DR17 for possible counterparts with similar kinematics and specific abundance ratios, but found none.

Confirming the existence (or absence) of analogs would constrain the frequency and nature of the proposed rare early-universe supernova mechanisms.

References

We were unable to find any candidates, but the current generation of large spectroscopic surveys may turn up future counterparts.
