Final Form of AI-Native Silicon Technologies

Characterize the final form of AI-native encapsulated technologies for silicon design, including their supporting models, tools, frameworks, concepts, and infrastructure.

Background

The paper compares the prospective AI-native silicon stack with the historical encapsulation of expertise in EDA tools and reusable intellectual property. It argues that agentic AI should be built compositionally on top of established silicon-design technologies and practices.

Because the relevant AI models, tools, frameworks, and infrastructure are changing rapidly, the eventual structure of the AI-native technology stack remains unresolved.

Currently, it is still an open question as to what the final form of these new AI native encapsulated technologies will look like since the supporting AI models, tools, frameworks, concepts, and infrastructure are rapidly changing.

Silicon design research should still need resolve how to expose EDA tools (potentially with license restrictions) for reproducing power, performance, and area results to fully realize this new AI native technical research model. Open source tools that are not limited by licenses and intellectual property restrictions are likely one part of the solution but (at the time of writing) the details of the research methodology are still an open question.
