Determine whether the dual formulation yields new physics beyond the Gross–Pitaevskii equation

Determine whether the dual gauge-theory formulation of two-dimensional superfluid turbulence yields physical insights not already known from studies of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation.

Background

The paper develops a dual gauge-theory description of two-dimensional superfluid turbulence and demonstrates that its equations reproduce the hydrodynamics obtained from the Gross–Pitaevskii theory. Because the dual equations are also nonlinear and computationally demanding, the authors explicitly question whether the reformulation provides genuinely new physical content rather than an alternative representation of established Gross–Pitaevskii results.

The question remains unresolved in the paper: the analysis focuses on turbulent behavior deep in the superfluid phase, while possible advantages of the dual variables near lattice superfluid–Mott-insulator transitions and in far-from-equilibrium insulating regimes are identified as directions for future investigation.

One may therefore legitimately ask whether any new physics can be gleaned from it that was not already known from studies of the GP equation.
