Develop citation-based disruption and external-outcome benchmarks for RUI

Develop a disruption-style index based on forward citations and benchmark the Research Uniqueness Index against interdisciplinarity measures and funding or award outcomes.

Background

The paper introduces the Research Uniqueness Index (RUI) as a citation-independent measure of how far researchers or institutions depart from a same-field standard population. Although the study compares RUI with reference-based atypical-combination novelty, it does not evaluate RUI against a disruption-style measure based on forward citations because the necessary citing–cited network data were unavailable.

The authors also leave benchmarking against interdisciplinarity and funding or award outcomes for future work. Such comparisons would help determine how RUI relates to established indicators of interdisciplinary research and to external forms of recognition or resource allocation.

Finally, a disruption-style index based on forward citations \citep{funk2017,wu2019} would complement the reference-based check but requires citing--cited network data beyond our current access, and benchmarking against interdisciplinarity and funding/award outcomes \citep{stirling2007} is likewise left to future work.
