Detuned truncation-resonance configurations in sustained vortex shedding

Investigate phononic-subsurface configurations in which the truncation-resonance frequency does not match the rigid-plate vortex-shedding frequency, in order to determine how detuning affects the coupled fluid–structure-interaction dynamics.

Background

The study fixes the phononic subsurface truncation-resonance frequency to the characteristic vortex-shedding frequency of the rigid flat plate. This alignment permits the authors to isolate the effects of chordwise positioning and displacement-amplitude envelope on the strongly coupled dynamics of the fully separated flow.

Configurations with a detuned truncation resonance—meaning that the truncation-resonance frequency differs from the shedding frequency—are not examined. Their influence on synchronization, amplification or attenuation of aerodynamic load oscillations, transient behavior, and limit-cycle response therefore remains unresolved.

We align $f_{\mathrm{TR}}$ with this characteristic shedding frequency as a starting point to investigate the PSub's interaction with the sustained vortex shedding, leaving the investigation of detuned configurations, where $f_{\mathrm{TR}}$ does not match the shedding frequency, to future work.
