Determine high-output-power EDFA efficiency

Determine the pump-driver and wall-plug power-conversion efficiency of erbium-doped fibre amplifiers designed to deliver very high output powers under the large-current operating conditions relevant to high-power hollow-core-fibre transmission.

Background

The numerical model uses a constant power-conversion efficiency and therefore assumes that the EDFA efficiency saturates at a steady state at very high launch powers. The paper observes that pump-driver efficiency generally decreases at high current because of excess thermal dissipation, but identifies a lack of reported efficiency data for EDFAs designed for the high output powers considered in the study. Resolving this uncertainty is important for accurately estimating the energy efficiency of high-power HCF links.

References

Typically the pump driver efficiency reduces when supplying large currents due to excess thermal dissipation, but the efficiency of EDFAs designed for such high output powers has not been reported in the literature.
