Dark-matter content of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies

Determine whether ultra-compact dwarf galaxies possess dark-matter haloes, in order to establish how dark-matter potentials influence AGB-ejecta capture and accretion-disk formation around central intermediate-mass black holes.

Background

The paper compares simulations with and without a dark-matter halo and finds that the halo can alter gas trapping and star formation. However, the interpretation is complicated by the uncertain observational status of dark matter in ultra-compact dwarf galaxies and by the adopted off-centre placement of the simulated system within the halo.

Establishing the dark-matter content of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies would clarify whether the additional gravitational potential generally assists or inhibits the formation and persistence of gas disks around intermediate-mass black holes.
