Identify and characterize the specific component(s) within seaweed extracts that trigger the phenylpropanoid and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways in plants, and elucidate the mechanisms by which seaweed extracts increase phytochemical content in plants and fruits.

Background

The thesis investigates the effects of several biostimulants—including seaweed extracts—on cucumber growth, yield, and fruit quality. The results show that seaweed extract can enhance non-enzymatic antioxidant traits such as total phenolic and flavonoid contents in fruits.

Despite these observed benefits and corroborating literature showing increased flavonoids after seaweed extract application, the authors note that the exact component(s) within seaweed extracts responsible for activating phenylpropanoid and flavonoid pathways are still not identified. They also highlight the need to clarify the underlying mechanisms driving the phytochemical increases induced by seaweed extracts.
