Compare physical and digital implementations of the card-sorting method

Determine whether physical XAI Evaluation Cards are superior to a digital implementation for supporting collaborative and reflective evaluation planning.

Background

The exploratory online session was less successful than the sessions using physical cards, but the formats differed simultaneously in several respects, including facilitation, familiarity with the use case, and interaction mode. Consequently, the observed difference cannot be attributed to the physical or digital format alone.

The paper therefore leaves unresolved whether physical cards provide an inherent advantage over digital tools. A future digital implementation must be evaluated while preserving the flexibility, collaborative character, and reflective qualities of the physical exercise.

References

We therefore cannot conclude that physical cards are inherently superior to a digital version.
