Statistical classification of low-latitude PCH-l fast wind

Determine whether PCH-l fast Alfvénic wind observed at low heliographic latitudes constitutes a distinct solar-wind class or a transitional evolutionary state associated with particular coronal source regions and magnetic geometries.

Background

This study reports only one persistent observation of fast, polar-coronal-hole-like solar wind in the sub-Alfvénic corona. The interval exhibits highly Alfvénic, strongly transverse, and highly imbalanced turbulence, but its spectral slope, fluctuation level, and cascade rate differ from previously observed sub-Alfvénic streams.

Because the sample consists of a single interval, the authors identify a need for statistical analysis of additional Parker Solar Probe observations. Such analysis is required to establish whether the observed properties define a distinct low-latitude solar-wind population or instead represent a transitional stage whose occurrence depends on coronal source-region properties and magnetic geometry.

References

Further statistical analysis of similar PSP intervals is needed to determine whether PCH-l fast Alfvénic wind at low latitudes represents a distinct solar wind class or a transitional evolutionary state associated with specific coronal source regions and magnetic geometries.
