Characterization of coincidence between the trait coordinate and domain performance

Characterize the item-bank conditions under which the bounded Cognitive Trait Model trait coordinate coincides with the expected proportion of the domain that a person can perform, and determine the implications for reporting a proportion-of-mastery score.

Background

The paper distinguishes the bounded trait coordinate from the expected proportion of correct responses over the entire item domain. Although both quantities are fixed to the same endpoint values under the model, they generally differ at interior trait levels because the expected domain proportion depends on the distribution of item difficulties across the bank.

The authors show this discrepancy empirically using LSAT estimates and state that a complete characterization of when the two quantities coincide, together with the consequences for reporting a proportion-of-mastery score, remains unfinished. This is an explicitly deferred mathematical and interpretive problem rather than a general aspiration.

A full characterization of when the two coincide is left to future work.
