Dominance of Galactic diffuse neutrino flux over the extragalactic diffuse flux

Ascertain whether there exists any energy interval in which the Galactic diffuse high-energy neutrino flux exceeds the extragalactic diffuse neutrino flux by performing higher-sensitivity, model-independent measurements of the Galactic plane neutrino spectrum.

Background

The first observation of the Milky Way in high-energy neutrinos opens the way to dissecting Galactic versus extragalactic contributions to the diffuse neutrino sky. Current sensitivity limits require template-based analyses, but future measurements aim at model-independent spectra and maps.

Determining if and where the Galactic diffuse component overtakes the extragalactic component would clarify cosmic-ray production and propagation in the Galaxy and refine multimessenger connections with gamma rays.

References

It remains to be seen whether there is any energy region where the Galactic diffuse flux outshines the extragalactic diffuse flux in neutrinos.
