Applicability of Source Evidence Under Current Task Conditions

Determine whether source evidence for a functionally compatible capability applies under the current task conditions.

Background

The paper discusses transfer methods that reuse information across domains and constrain which aspects of learned representations should remain stable. Although these methods improve representation reuse and predictor robustness, the paper identifies an unresolved issue concerning whether evidence collected for a functionally compatible capability remains valid when the task conditions change.

TACT addresses this issue by conditioning source evidence on the current task and applying a bounded signed contextual correction. The correction can increase or decrease a capability’s score, and it vanishes when supporting evidence is unavailable. Thus, the unresolved question motivates the contextual-validation component of TACT, even though the proposed experiments provide empirical evidence rather than a general resolution of source-evidence applicability.

These approaches improve representation reuse or predictor robustness, but leave unresolved whether source evidence for a functionally compatible capability applies under the current task conditions.
