A state-space system is a mathematical framework for modeling the internal dynamics and external behavior of dynamical systems, notably in control theory, system identification, signal processing, machine learning, and network modeling. At its core, a state-space system is defined by a collection of maps or matrices that describe how a multidimensional state evolves over time under the action of inputs, and how states are mapped to outputs. State-space models provide a universal language for both deterministic and stochastic systems, linear and nonlinear dynamics, and both continuous and discrete time. Foundational results establish their minimality and universal representability for causal, time-invariant systems (Rojas et al., 2022). Solution properties are characterized rigorously through operator theory, fixed-point arguments, semigroup properties, and series expansions (Bamieh, 2022, Ortega et al., 12 Apr 2024). Recent research has deepened the connection between classical systems theory, reservoir computing, and modern kernelized architectures, expanded the formalism to cover stochastic processes and quantum systems, and provided robust parameterizations for stability and optimal control.

7. Further Developments and Directions
Recent research addresses the property-driven coarsening of large, stochastic state spaces, optimizing aggregation to preserve high-level behavioral specifications rather than only rate or structural similarity (Michaelides et al., 2016). In linear multivariable systems, vector spaces of matrix pencils and strong linearizations enable systematic Rosenbrock or symmetric/Hermitian linearizations for transfer functions, with consequences for numerical computation and system reduction (Bist et al., 23 May 2024).
For passive, positive/bounded-real LTI systems, matrix-convexity, the Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov (KYP) Lemma, and a unified quadratic matrix inequality (QMI) framework tightly characterize state-space representations and their control-theoretic properties (Lewkowicz, 2020). Turnpike theorems and the convergence of Riccati equations, even in the absence of detectability, are now thoroughly understood for both standard and descriptor systems (Heiland et al., 2020).
Mechanically-inspired normal forms and modal decompositions are made algorithmically accessible through explicit state transformations, preserving the second-order and passivity structures necessary for modern energy-based and port-Hamiltonian control (Johannes et al., 2021).
