where xx is the decision vector, X\mathcal{X} is the feasible set defined by equality and inequality constraints, and each fif_i is an objective to be minimized or maximized.

Pareto optimality is central: a solution xx^* is said to be Pareto optimal if there is no other feasible xx such that fi(x)fi(x)f_i(x) \leq f_i(x^*) for all ii and fj(x)<fj(x)f_j(x) < f_j(x^*) for at least one jj. The image of all Pareto optimal solutions in the objective space is called the Pareto front. Solutions on this front represent trade-offs—for example, in engineering design, between cost and performance (Chehouri et al., 2016).

2. Scalarization Techniques

Direct optimization of multiple objectives is generally infeasible due to the lack of a total order among vectors. Instead, scalarization reduces the problem to a parameterized single-objective form, allowing standard optimization algorithms to be used. Common scalarization approaches include:

  • ϵ\epsilon-Constraint Method: Optimize one objective while turning others into constraints, often sampled systematically to produce many Pareto points (Hasan, 2023).
  • Lexicographic Method: Prioritize objectives and optimize them in sequence, constraining subsequent solutions to respect previous optima (Hasan, 2023).
