The Graph Hierarchical Abstraction Module (GHAM) is a framework and computational paradigm for building, analyzing, and leveraging multi-level hierarchical representations of graph-structured data. Spanning theoretical, algorithmic, and application domains, GHAM enables fine-to-coarse abstraction of complex graphs, facilitates scalable algorithms, and provides the basis for both descriptive analytics and generative modeling. It is fundamental across graph modular decomposition, scalable analytics for large networks, self-supervised graph learning, hierarchical message passing in neural architectures, and graph-based formulations of optimization and control.

1. Formal Definition and Theoretical Foundations

GHAM formalizes the association between a graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) and its hierarchical abstraction, typically via a modular or partition-based decomposition. In the modular decomposition setting (Ludena et al., 2018), a module MVM\subseteq V is a subset such that for every uMu\notin M, either vM\forall v\in M (u,v)E(u,v)\in E or vM\forall v\in M (u,v)E(u,v)\notin E. The modular decomposition tree (MDT) is a rooted, uniquely defined tree TT whose internal nodes are labeled as:

  • Series: child modules are fully joined (quotient is a clique)
  • Parallel: child modules are fully disconnected (quotient is edgeless)
  • Prime: otherwise “prime” graphs (only trivial modules)

Gallai’s uniqueness theorem establishes that—under this series/parallel/prime labeling and certain parent-child constraints—the MDT decomposition of any graph is unique (Ludena et al., 2018). The GHAM is thus the mapping:

where TT is the MDT, and each G[M]G[M] is the induced subgraph on a module MM. Alternatively, in other settings, GHAM generalizes to nested partition hierarchies (SuperGraph/Graph-Tree (Jr. et al., 2015)) or hypergraph hierarchies (OptiGraph/OptiNode/OptiEdge (Jalving et al., 2020, Cole et al., 2023)).

Node and edge connectivity, subgraph aggregation, and inter-level mappings are achieved by formal assignment/projection matrices and associated block structures.

    • Hierarchical GNNs: Memory and compute complexity are typically O(md)O(m d) in the base layer, with super-graph construction and inter-level operations incurring O(nTd)O(nT d) overhead for TT levels; major gains in parameter efficiency and improved representation capacity are observed in practice (Zhong et al., 2020, Sobolevsky, 2021).

Modular construction and hierarchical linking of subgraphs streamline changing time horizons, resolution, and solution strategies.
  • Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL): DRL-TH (Li et al., 30 Dec 2025) integrates GHAM in its perception stack, leveraging hierarchical graph pooling and (learnable) fusion to combine multi-modal sequences for adaptive, robust navigation policies in UGVs.
