1. Fundamental Principles and Classification

DDMs exploit the modularity of subdomains to enable simultaneous computation, reduce memory bottlenecks, and tailor numerical strategies to local properties (e.g., material heterogeneity, mesh anisotropy). The main classes are:

  • Overlapping methods: Subdomains Ωi overlap; classical Schwarz algorithms exchange boundary data from neighbor iterates to enforce continuity and accelerate convergence (Li et al., 2020, Vabishchevich et al., 2014).
  • Non-overlapping methods: Subdomains are strictly partitioned; continuity or flux-matching is imposed via explicit interface conditions, Lagrange multipliers, or primal constraints (e.g., FETI, BDDC, mortar methods) (Jayadharan et al., 2020, Crawford et al., 2022).

Transmission conditions (Dirichlet–Neumann, Robin–Robin, optimized interface operators) govern information exchange and are key to performance and robustness. Operator splitting and partition-of-unity frameworks generalize these ideas to adaptivity and multiscale discretizations (Holst, 2010).

2. Algorithmic and Analytical Frameworks

Non-overlapping methods reduce the global problem to an interface system for Lagrange multipliers, resulting in positive-definite operators solvable by Krylov methods such as GMRES or CG (Jayadharan et al., 2020). Two-level and multilevel extensions introduce a coarse correction step, often based on spectral or localized basis functions, that captures global error components missed by one-level iteration (Ciaramella et al., 2019, Bastian et al., 2021).

Partition-of-unity methods construct global approximations as weighted sums of local solves, with rigorous error estimates available in both H1 and L2 norms, and have been adapted for parallel adaptive finite element software (Holst, 2010).

3. Computational Architecture and Parallel Scalability

DDMs are inherently suited to distributed-memory architectures, with each processor assigned to one or more subdomains. MPI communication or shared-memory threading handles interface exchanges. Scalability is governed by several parameters:

The mesh-free strategies employed by machine learning-based solvers further decouple geometry from discretization, allowing random or adaptive sampling of collocation points and facilitating deployment on heterogeneous or cloud-based compute infrastructures (Li et al., 2020, Wu et al., 23 Jul 2025).

  • Learning-based DDMs: Neural operators pretrained on reference domains serve as surrogates for local solvers, enabling scalable solution of PDEs with discontinuous coefficients and complex microstructures. Theoretical existence results guarantee uniform approximation under mild regularity and domain composition assumptions (Wu et al., 23 Jul 2025). Variational deep domain decomposition frameworks generalize these ideas, embedding mesh-free learning directly into classical Schwarz iterations (Li et al., 2019, Li et al., 2020, Sun et al., 2022).

Parallel partition-of-unity methods and DDMs with adaptive error estimation allow asynchronous refinement and solve cycles with minimal communication requirements, applicable even in large-scale nonlinear and multiphysics settings (Holst, 2010).

5. Applications Across Domains

Domain decomposition technology is a critical enabler of large-scale, parallel simulation and optimization in scientific computing:

  • Elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic PDEs: DDMs provide scalable solvers for Poisson, heat, Helmholtz, elasticity, Stokes, Navier–Stokes, and more, including complex boundary/interface phenomena.
  • Engineering and physical sciences: High-fidelity modeling of photonic, electromagnetic, mechanical, and geological systems with multiscale heterogeneities (Wang et al., 25 Sep 2025, Mally et al., 8 Jan 2025).

Recent advances demonstrate a symbiotic relationship between domain decomposition and machine learning:

  • Physics-informed learning within DDM: Subdomain PINNs/Deep Ritz networks, mesh-free neural surrogates, and operator-learning schemes (e.g., FNO, DNO) are embedded into Schwarz or optimized interface iterations, preserving classical convergence factors and expanding modeling capabilities to irregular geometries (Li et al., 2020, Sun et al., 2022, Wu et al., 23 Jul 2025, Li et al., 2019).
  • ML for DDM optimization: Neural networks learn coarse space selection, transmission operators, and optimal overlaps, reducing iteration counts and setup times for FETI-DP, BDDC, and Schwarz variants (Klawonn et al., 2023).
  • Partition-of-unity network architectures: Adaptive gating and windowing strategies select or blend local surrogates, further accelerating large-scale solvers with minimal loss of accuracy.

Challenges remain regarding mesh/PDE/generalization independence, scaling to high-dimensional and coupled multiphysics systems, and obtaining rigorous convergence guarantees for hybrid ML-DDM architectures. Promising directions include fully asynchronous implementations, coarse-space acceleration via global learned networks, and dynamic load-balancing under cloud or exascale constraints (Klawonn et al., 2023).
