Principal limitations include computational intensity (quadratic scaling with label set size in matrix-based protocols), necessity of threshold tuning, and binary labels in basic implementations. Some approaches are sensitive to the size and distribution of label sets and may not generalize to non-instruct-tuned models. Current extensions explore scalar score derivations (entropy, KL-divergence), meta-classifiers over confusion matrix patterns, and richer aggregation metrics (variance, disagreement, entropy) (Wagner et al., 15 Oct 2024).

A plausible implication is that, as confusion-based techniques mature, they will increasingly underpin safety-critical deployments, enhance interpretability, and inform the design of new learning and reasoning systems that explicitly reason about their own uncertainty.
