The Information Bottleneck is NP-hard

Published 15 Oct 2026 in cs.IT | (2610.22272v1)

Abstract: Given a joint distribution PXYP_{XY} on a finite alphabet, the information bottleneck method seeks a representation TT of XX that is as informative as possible about YY while compressing XX, where TT and YY are conditionally independent given XX. We show that computing the optimal value IB(PXY,R)=sup⁡TI(Y;T):I(X;T)≤R\mathrm{IB}(P_{XY},R) = \sup_T { I(Y;T) : I(X;T) \le R } of the information bottleneck problem, as well as its Lagrangian relaxation Lβ(PXY)=sup⁡T[I(Y;T)−βI(X;T)]L_β(P_{XY}) = \sup_T \big[I(Y;T) - βI(X;T)\big], is NP-hard. Moreover, unless P=NP\mathrm{P} = \mathrm{NP}, neither IB(PXY,R)\mathrm{IB}(P_{XY},R) nor Lβ(PXY)L_β(P_{XY}) can be approximated in polynomial time within an additive error of order ∣X∣−3/2|\mathcal{X}|{-3/2}.
