Bounded cohomology of transformation groups in all degrees

Published 8 Oct 2026 in math.GT, math.GR, and math.SG | (2610.11327v1)

Abstract: Let MM be a compact connected oriented smooth manifold, of dimension n≥2n\ge2. Let TMG\mathcal T_MG be one of the following transformation groups: Homeo0(M,μ)Homeo_0(M,μ), Diff0(M,μ)Diff_0(M,μ), Symp0(M,ω)Symp_0(M, ω) (in case MM is symplectic) and Ham(M,ω)Ham(M, ω) (in case MM is symplectic). Denote by H‾bd(TM)\overline{H}_bd(\mathcal T_M) reduced bounded cohomology of TM\mathcal T_M in degree dd, and by EH‾d(TM)\overline{EH}d(\mathcal T_M) reduced exact bounded cohomology of TM\mathcal T_M in degree dd. In this paper we prove that if n=2n=2 and MM is a closed surface ΣgΣ_g or a disc D\mathbb D, then for every d≥2d\ge 2 dim⁡(H‾bd(TM))=∞.\dim(\overline{H}bd(\mathcal T_M))=\infty. Moreover, dim⁡EH‾d(TM)=∞\dim\overline{EH}d(\mathcal T_M)=\infty if TM\mathcal T_M is either Diff0(Σg,μ)Diff_0(Σ_g,μ) or Ham(Σg,ω)Ham(Σ_g, ω), or Ham(D,ω)Ham(\mathbb{D}, ω); or $g>1$. In case $n>2$, under certain conditions on π1(M)π_1(M), we prove that for every degree d≥2d\ge 2 dim⁡EH‾d(TM)=∞.\dim\overline{EH}d(\mathcal T_M)=\infty. In particular, these results hold for TM\mathcal T_M when MM is a closed, orientable smooth manifold admitting a Riemannian metric of strictly negative sectional curvature of an arbitrary dimension.
