Generating cyclic pivot Gray codes for well-ordered kk-degenerate graphs in constant amortized time

Published 7 Oct 2026 in cs.DS | (2610.09410v1)

Abstract: A graph GG is kk-degenerate if there exists an ordering v1,v2,…,vnv_1, v_2, \dots, v_n of its vertices such that each vertex viv_i has at most kk neighbors vjv_j in GG with $j < i$. A well-ordered kk-degenerate graph is a labeled graph on the vertex set 1,2,…,n{1, 2, \dots, n} in which every vertex ii has at most kk neighbors among 1,2,…,i−11, 2, \dots, i-1. We present the first simple algorithms that generate, rank, and unrank cyclic pivot Gray codes for well-ordered kk-degenerate graphs, where consecutive graphs differ by the addition, removal, or pivoting of a single edge. Our algorithm generates each well-ordered kk-degenerate graph in constant amortized time per graph, using O(n2)O(n2) space, while ranking and unranking take O(n2)O(n2) time and O(n2)O(n2) space.
