Regularity for HH-systems of bounded distortion

Published 5 Oct 2026 in math.AP | (2610.06441v1)

Abstract: We consider weak solutions u∈W1,n(U,Rn+1)u \in W{1,n}(U,\mathbf{R}{n+1}) of the HH-system −div⁡(∣Du∣n−2Du)=(H∘u) Ju- \operatorname{div} ( |\mathrm{D} u|{n-2} \mathrm{D} u ) = (H \circ u) \, \mathbf{J} u, where n≥2n \ge 2, UU is the open unit ball in Rn\mathbf{R}n, and HH is bounded. We show that uu is locally bounded if its distortion ∣Du∣n/∣Ju∣|\mathrm{D} u|n / |\mathbf{J} u| is bounded on the set where ∣u∣|u| is large. If moreover HH is Hölder continuous, then uu is locally Hölder continuous. The proof pushes forward ∣Du∣n−2Du∘Du∗|\mathrm{D} u|{n-2} \mathrm{D} u \circ \mathrm{D} u* by uu to a linear functional on continuous maps of Rn+1\mathbf{R}{n+1} into Hom⁡(Rn+1,Rn+1)\operatorname{Hom}(\mathbf{R}{n+1},\mathbf{R}{n+1}) with compact support, whose values on derivatives are controlled by the equation. When the distortion is bounded, this functional satisfies the hypotheses of an inequality of Michael--Simon type for measures satisfying a first-order partial differential equation, due to De Philippis, Gennaioli, Pigati, and Rindler. The inequality yields lower bounds for the mass ratios of the push-forward of ∣Du∣nLn|\mathrm{D} u|n \mathscr{L}n by uu, and these imply boundedness.
