Arakelov inequalities for fibered surfaces in positive characteristic

Published 2 Oct 2026 in math.AG | (2610.02760v1)

Abstract: Let f:S→Cf:S\to C be a relatively minimal semistable fibration of genus g≥2g\ge2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p&gt;0$ with smooth and geometrically connected generic fiber. Let Σ⊂CΣ\subset C denote the set of points over which the fibers are singular, with s=∣Σ∣s=|Σ|. If the total surface SS is Hodge Witt and s≥2s\ge2, we prove the classical Arakelov inequality deg f<em>ω<em>S/C≤g2deg ΩC1(log⁡Σ), \text{deg}\, f_<em>ω<em>{S/C}\le \frac g2 \text{deg}\, Ω_C1(\logΣ), where ω</em>S/Cω</em>{S/C} denotes the relative dualizing sheaf. For C=P1C=\mathbb P1, we obtain the stronger estimate deg f</em>ω<em>S/P1≤g2(s−2)−12b1(S), \text{deg}\, f_</em>ω<em>{S/\mathbb P1}\le \frac g2(s-2)-\frac12 b_1(S), where b1(S)b_1(S) is the first Betti number of SS. We also construct a genus-$2$ semistable fibration over P1\mathbb P1 with exactly $4$ singular fibers in characteristic $5$. Its total surface is Hodge Witt, and deg f</em>∗ωS/P1=2=g2(s−2). \text{deg}\, f</em>*ω_{S/\mathbb P1}=2=\frac g2(s-2). Thus Nguyen's lower bound s≥4s\ge4 and the Hodge--Witt Arakelov inequality are both sharp. As applications, we derive a canonical-class inequality and a Szpiro-type inequality with coefficients linear in gg.
