Upper and lower bounds on the OBDD-width of a special integer multiplication

Published 31 Aug 2026 in cs.CC and cs.DS | (2608.30664v1)

Abstract: We consider the Boolean function SMul<em>n−1n(x,y){\rm SMul}<em>{n-1}n(\boldsymbol{x},\boldsymbol{y}), which computes the middle bit of the multiplication of two natural numbers represented as nn-bit binary strings x\boldsymbol{x} and y\boldsymbol{y}, drawn from a restricted domain. We investigate the width of OBDDs computing SMul</em>n−1n{\rm SMul}</em>{n-1}n. We introduce a combinatorially defined function s<em>(n)s_<em>(n) and show that the width of such OBDDs is Θ(2s</em>(n))Θ(2{s_</em>(n)}).
