Configuration spaces and the Arone--Mahowald theorem

Abstract: We take up the study, initiated by Fred Cohen, of the Cartan--Leray spectral sequence for Euclidean configuration spaces, establishing a decomposition as a direct sum of atomic spectral sequences. As an immediate consequence, we recover a difficult theorem of Arone--Mahowald on the vanishing of Goodwillie derivatives of the identity.
