Introduction
This paper presents a rigorous, multidimensional evaluation of the Financial Times 50 (FT50) journal list, widely adopted as a benchmark for research quality in business and management scholarship. Rejecting the monolithic interpretation of FT50 journals as a uniform tier, the study analyzes per-publication impact across three orthogonal dimensions: scholarly (citation-based), policy (public policy uptake), and technological (patent citations) impact. Leveraging a panel of over 60,000 articles published in 53 FT50 and recently removed journals from 2005–2019, the analysis interrogates the validity of treating FT50 journals as interchangeable in their scientific and societal influence.
Methodology
The data infrastructure integrates Elsevier Scopus (for scholarly metrics), SciVal (for bibliometric, usage, and patent citation data), and Overton (for policy citations). To ensure comparability and to control for disciplinary and temporal effects, all indicators are field- and volume-normalized on a per-publication basis. The analysis comprises seven indicators: three citation-based (FWCI, Top-10% rate, field-weighted views), two policy-related (policy citations/paper, proportion of papers cited by policy documents), and two patent-related (patent citations/paper, proportion of papers cited in patents). Journals are further grouped into eleven sub-disciplines to parse channel-specific effects. Sensitivity is addressed through windowed analyses and robust ranking procedures, including z-scoring and rank aggregation.
Key Findings
Heterogeneity and Channel Orthogonality
Empirical results reveal profound intra-FT50 heterogeneity. There are orders-of-magnitude differences across journals on every channel, even after controlling for output and field. For instance, policy citations per publication show a 250-fold range, and the top and bottom quartiles are separated by factors of up to 19× in policy reach and 2.5× in FWCI. Composite Ranking and Quality Mapping

Longitudinal stability is substantial: Kendall τ between main and alternative windowed rankings is 0.78–0.89, with the lowest cross-window value at 0.69. This stability is highest on policy indicators, lowest on patent reach, reflecting the sparsity and reporting lags characteristic of patent data. Notable outlier journals do experience nontrivial directional shifts—e.g., some accounting and operations journals have declining or improving trends—but cross-sectional quartile assignment is robust.

Limitations
Analytical limitations include restriction to FT50 journals with no direct comparator cohort (e.g., ABS-AJG 4* journals), inclusion of self-citations, possible Overton policy coverage biases, and boundary heuristics in sub-discipline assignment. Indicator dynamics are also influenced by list changes and expanding policy/patent databases, complicating ultimate generalizability outside the sampled window.
Conclusion
The multidimensional, per-publication analysis unequivocally demonstrates that the FT50 is not a homogeneous set but a spectrum across citation, policy, and patent impact. Orthogonality across these dimensions means journal strength in one domain does not imply strength in another. The practical inference is that research evaluation frameworks using the FT50 should shift from binary to channel-aware, tiered, or multidimensional representations to capture the true diversity and reach of published scholarship.
Future work should consider cross-list benchmarking, explicit exclusion of self-citations, more granular policy/patent database integration, and the development of dynamic, multidimensional evaluation rubrics for business and management research. These directions would advance the fidelity of research assessment and enable more nuanced, field-appropriate measures of scholarly and societal value.
