Overview and physical motivation
This paper by Dupont and Klevtsov studies the geometry of fractional quantum Hall states with quasihole excitations on compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. The central object is a holomorphic vector bundle over the quasihole moduli space SmC — the m-th symmetric power of the underlying curve — whose fiber at a configuration {w1,…,wm} is the space of Laughlin states with quasiholes localized at those positions. The authors compute the Chern character of this bundle via Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch (GRR) and show that, in the completely filled regime, it matches term by term the standard decomposition of the Berry phase under quasihole exchange into an extensive Aharonov–Bohm part and a fractional statistical part π/b (2605.18089).
The starting point is Laughlin's ansatz for n particles in the plane, with quasihole insertions at positions w1,…,wm: the wave-function acquires factors ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c encoding particle–quasihole vanishing of order c, alongside the usual order-b particle–particle vanishing. Adiabatic exchange of two quasiholes is predicted to produce a geometric phase φ=−π⟨n⟩+π/b, where the second term signals anyonic statistics. The paper's contribution is to derive this decomposition from characteristic classes of an algebraically defined bundle.
Construction of the quasihole bundle
For a genus-m0 curve m1 with magnetic line bundle m2 of degree m3, the Laughlin states with quasiholes at m4 are identified with holomorphic sections of a line bundle m5, defined as the descent to the symmetric product of
m6
where m7 is the big diagonal and m8 the quasihole divisor. The axioms — holomorphicity per particle, (anti)symmetry for even/odd m9, and the two vanishing conditions — reproduce Laughlin's planar states while handling global properties on compact surfaces correctly.
A universal line bundle {w1,…,wm}0 is constructed by descending {w1,…,wm}1 from {w1,…,wm}2; uniqueness follows from the SeeSaw theorem. The quasihole bundle is then
{w1,…,wm}3
Vanishing of higher direct images is established via ampleness of {w1,…,wm}4 (for {w1,…,wm}5, where {w1,…,wm}6), so Grauert's theorem guarantees {w1,…,wm}7 is a genuine vector bundle. A notable conceptual choice: the parameter space is taken to be the full symmetric product {w1,…,wm}8, including the diagonals where quasiholes merge. This is legitimate because {w1,…,wm}9 is smooth and the wave-functions continue analytically across the diagonal, and it enables the Chern class computation; whether merging or splitting quasiholes is energetically accessible is explicitly set aside as a separate question.
Chern character via Grothendieck–Riemann–Roch
Working in the Néron–Severi group of π/b0, generated by theta classes π/b1, hyperplane classes π/b2, and the mixed class π/b3, the first Chern class of the universal bundle is
π/b4
Applying GRR and pushing forward first along π/b5 (using the Poincaré formula) and then along π/b6, the main result reads:
π/b7
with binomial coefficients vanishing outside their natural range. Two consequences follow immediately. For π/b8 the Chern character vanishes identically: no Laughlin states with quasiholes exist. For π/b9 — the completely filled case, n0 — the formula collapses to the exponential form
n1
The rank n2 coincides with the Wen–Niu topological degeneracy on genus-n3 surfaces, and the slope n4 separates cleanly into two terms: the n5 coefficient encodes the fractional statistics (n6 holonomy around the Jacobian torus under the standard adiabatic transport process), while the n7 term is the extensive Aharonov–Bohm contribution proportional to particle number and quasihole charge, previously computed on the sphere by Read.
The exponential form also constitutes the projective-flatness criterion: projectively flat bundles must satisfy n8. The result thus shows the completely filled Laughlin bundle passes this "geometric test" for topological order, whereas for n9 the character is not exponential — consistent with the expectation that partially filled configurations are not topological states of matter. The authors note that constructing an actual unitary projectively flat connection remains hard except in highly symmetric cases such as the torus; the exponential character is necessary but not by itself a construction of such a connection.
Explicit verification in low genus
In genus zero, the state space is one-dimensional and spanned by the single section w1,…,wm0; computing the curvature of the Chern connection from the w1,…,wm1 Gram matrix yields w1,…,wm2 directly.
In genus one, the rank-w1,…,wm3 basis is built from theta functions,
w1,…,wm4
recovering Einarsson's construction. The Gram matrix itself is not computable in closed form, but its cohomology-level invariants are: using quasi-periodicity of the theta functions, the rescaled matrix w1,…,wm5 transforms by conjugation under constant matrices under shifts w1,…,wm6 and w1,…,wm7, which forces all positive-degree traces w1,…,wm8 to vanish in cohomology. Consequently
w1,…,wm9
confirming the GRR computation independently and reproducing the fractional statistical phase ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c0 in the exponent.
Charge transport and multilayer generalization
Extending the framework to simultaneous transport over quasihole positions and Aharonov–Bohm fluxes, a universal bundle ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c1 over ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c2 is pushed forward to give, in the maximally filled case,
∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c3
The additional terms encode Hall conductance under flux variation; the coefficient ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c4 of ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c5 is interpreted as the quasihole conductance, carrying charge ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c6 opposite in sign to the particles, as expected physically.
Finally, the construction generalizes to Halperin multilayer states with ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c7 layers and ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c8 quasihole types, encoded by symmetric interaction matrix ∏μ,γ(zμ−wγ)c9 and vanishing matrix c0. Under the assumption that c1 is non-negative (needed for Kodaira vanishing, ensuring the pushforward is a vector bundle) and the filling condition c2, the Chern character is
c3
with c4 a matrix of theta classes and the dot denoting the Hadamard product. The proof reduces the pushforward along c5 to a Grassmann-algebra integral evaluated by Wick's theorem for complex fermions, yielding c6 per handle. Note that the non-negativity of c7 is a genuine hypothesis here; the result does not cover interaction matrices violating it.
Limitations and open questions
Several restrictions bound the scope of the results. The explicit Berry-curvature verification is carried out only for c8 and c9, and only for unit quasihole charge b0 in the torus calculation; the higher-genus statement rests solely on the cohomological GRR argument. The Gram matrices are not computed explicitly at finite b1 — only their cohomology classes are extracted. The projective-flatness conclusion is a condition on the Chern character, not a construction of a projectively flat connection away from special cases. The treatment deliberately includes the collision diagonal without addressing whether multi-charge quasiholes can physically form or split. Finally, the multilayer theorem requires b2 and the stated degree constraint; behavior outside these regimes is not determined.
Conclusion
The paper provides a complete algebro-geometric determination of the Chern character of Laughlin quasihole bundles over symmetric-product moduli spaces, for arbitrary genus and for Halperin multilayer systems with multiple quasihole types. In the completely filled regime the character takes the exponential form required of projectively flat bundles, and its first-Chern-class decomposition reproduces exactly the extensive-plus-fractional structure of the predicted anyonic exchange phase, with the statistical angle b3 appearing as the coefficient of the theta class. Low-genus computations via explicit theta-function frames confirm the abstract result through the Berry curvature of the natural Chern connection.
