Photonic hyperentanglement in polarisation and frequency via joint spectrum shaping

Published 3 Mar 2026 in quant-ph, physics.app-ph, and physics.optics | (2603.03428v1)

Abstract: Hyperentanglement offers enhanced capacity for quantum information processing and communication protocols, especially in combination with robust high-dimensional degrees of freedom such as frequency-bin encoding. Here, we present a single-pass, unfiltered, down-conversion source of hyperentangled photon pairs in polarisation and frequency-bin degrees of freedom with dynamically tunable state dimension and composition at telecom wavelengths. We achieve this by optimal tailoring of the photons' joint spectral amplitude via pump and nonlinearity shaping. Using polarisation-resolved time-of-flight spectrometry and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, we characterise the hyperentangled states and demonstrate for the polarisation component fidelities exceeding 99% averaged over frequency bins and concurrences above 98%. The degree of spectral entanglement, quantified by the Hong-Ou-Mandel visibility, is measured as 90%, well in line with numerical simulations. This approach provides a scalable route toward high-dimensional quantum states for quantum communication and computing applications.

Summary

  • The paper demonstrates a single-pass, filter-free SPDC source that generates polarisation–frequency hyperentangled photon pairs at telecom wavelengths using programmable pump shaping and custom aKTP crystals.
  • The source achieves polarisation fidelities above 99%, concurrences above 98%, an experimental Schmidt number of 2.098(2), and 90.3(4)% intra-pair HOM visibility, confirming high-quality spectral entanglement.
  • Reprogramming only the pump spectrum produces higher-dimensional states, including four-mode Bell-state combinations and Bell–qutrit states, supporting applications in quantum networking, dense wavelength multiplexing, and photonic information processing.

This paper reports the experimental generation and full characterisation of photon pairs hyperentangled in polarisation and frequency-bin degrees of freedom (DOF) at telecom wavelengths, using a single-pass, unfiltered spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source (2603.03428). The central technical achievement is a two-dimensional shaping of the joint spectral amplitude (JSA), combining programmable spectral shaping of a femtosecond pump laser with custom aperiodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (aKTP) crystals, which yields frequency-bin structures that go beyond the conventional correlated/anti-correlated dichotomy. The authors report polarisation fidelities exceeding 99% averaged over all frequency bins, concurrences above 98%, and a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) visibility of 90.3(4)% quantifying the degree of spectral entanglement.

Joint spectrum engineering approach

The JSA of SPDC pairs factorises into the product of the pump envelope function (PEF) and the phase-matching function (PMF). The source exploits independent control over both: a folded $4f$ pulse shaper with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator carves a multi-Gaussian PEF from a broadband Ti:sapphire pump (~150 fs pulses at 76 MHz repetition rate), while sub-coherence-length domain engineering of the aKTP crystals produces a multi-Gaussian PMF with a designed π\pi-phase shift between adjacent antinodes. The resulting joint spectrum exhibits four well-separated, C4C_4-rotationally symmetric frequency bins arranged symmetrically about degeneracy. At the crystal's design wavelength of 791 nm, the simulated Schmidt number is K=2.033K = 2.033, close to the ideal two-mode maximally entangled state.

Polarisation entanglement is generated simultaneously by placing each aKTP crystal within a Sagnac loop interferometer pumped bidirectionally, producing the hyperentangled state

ψ=ψpψf,\ket{\psi} = \ket{\psi_{\text{p}}} \otimes \ket{\psi_{\text{f}}},

a tensor product of a tunable polarisation Bell state and a sum of two antisymmetric frequency Bell states over three frequency bins ω1>ω2>ω3\omega_1 > \omega_2 > \omega_3. Because the Sagnac optics are matched to 1551 nm rather than the crystal's design wavelength of 791 nm, the realised JSA deviates slightly from perfect symmetry, giving a simulated Schmidt number of Ksim=2.088K_{\text{sim}} = 2.088. The authors note this mismatch as the primary limitation on interference visibilities; operating both components at the same design wavelength would mitigate it.

Spectral characterisation

The joint spectral intensity (JSI) was measured via time-of-flight spectrometry (TOFS) with dispersion modules providing −1350 ps/nm, yielding an experimental Schmidt number of Kexp=2.098(2)K_{\text{exp}} = 2.098(2), in close agreement with simulation. Intra-pair HOM interference at zero delay shows an anti-bunching peak — the signature of an antisymmetric frequency-bin entangled state given the engineered π\pi-phase structure — with a fitted visibility of 90.3(4)% against a simulated value of 92.62(2)%. Simulations at the design pump wavelength predict a theoretical visibility of approximately 99.9%, indicating that the residual gap stems from the wavelength mismatch rather than from intrinsic limits of the shaping method.

Heralded inter-pair HOM interference between signal photons from two independent sources yielded a visibility of 44.2(1.2)% versus a simulated 47.65(1)%. The data reproduce the predicted rapid oscillations modulated by a Gaussian envelope, confirming the absence of major unwanted intra-bin spectral phase correlations and supporting the feasibility of multi-photon protocols with independent sources.

Spectral shaping tunability

A key advantage demonstrated is reconfigurability: changing only the pump spectral shaping, without modifying the crystals, alters the frequency-bin structure. Two additional pump configurations were tested:

Pump configuration Target state KsimK_{\text{sim}} π\pi0
Double Gaussian (half PMF spacing) Sum of two Bell states over four modes 3.882 3.881(2)
Triple Gaussian Bell state plus qutrit state 3.600 3.701(2)

Both configurations target π\pi1. The shortfall arises mainly from partial overlap among adjacent frequency bins, which the authors note could be removed by increasing the design spacing between PMF Gaussian peaks; for the triple-Gaussian case, uneven peak heights account for the simulation–experiment discrepancy.

Polarisation entanglement per frequency bin

Using polarisation-resolved TOFS with 36 projection settings (36 hours total integration) and superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, the authors performed maximum-likelihood tomography of the polarisation density matrix for each of the four frequency bins, targeting π\pi2. Fidelities were 99.248(4)%, 99.16(4)%, 98.98(4)%, and 99.053(9)% for Bins 1–4, with concurrences of 98.76(3)%, 98.66(3)%, 98.23(3)%, and 98.37(3)% respectively. These figures confirm that high-quality polarisation entanglement coexists with the frequency-bin structure in every bin.

The JSI was additionally reconstructed for all 36 projections to verify basis-independence of the spectral entanglement. Raw purities degrade for projections with low counting statistics (an artefact of Schmidt decomposition under Poissonian noise); after applying a noise-correction procedure based on retaining the first four singular values, the average purity across all projections is 0.468(1), corresponding to π\pi3, consistent with the non-polarisation-resolved measurement.

Exchange-symmetry verification of hyperentanglement

To demonstrate genuine simultaneous entanglement in both DOF — rather than a mixture — the authors exploit exchange symmetry in polarisation-resolved HOM interference. Because the frequency state is antisymmetric under particle exchange, bosonic symmetrisation forces the interference behaviour to invert relative to ordinary polarisation-entangled photons: the triplet state π\pi4 produces anti-bunching, while the singlet π\pi5 produces bunching. Measurements in the H/V basis show exactly this inversion, with average visibilities of 88.0(8)% (π\pi6) and 88.1(8)% (π\pi7). Projections in the D/A basis provide the decisive signature: the triplet maps to π\pi8, yielding same-polarisation coincidences (visibility 91.3(6)%), whereas the singlet retains cross-polarisation coincidences (average visibility 91.0(9)%). A classical mixture of frequency-bin occupations would produce flat traces instead of the observed beating patterns. These observations constitute unambiguous evidence of hyperentanglement and demonstrate independent control of one DOF without disturbing the other.

Limitations and open questions

The paper concedes several limitations. Operation of the Sagnac optics away from the crystal's design wavelength degrades the JSA symmetry and caps the intra-pair HOM visibility at ~90% versus a theoretical ~99.9%; matching design wavelengths across crystal and optics is identified as the remedy but not implemented here. Partial bin overlap reduces the Schmidt number below the ideal π\pi9 in the extended configurations, fixable only through new crystal designs with larger PMF peak spacing. Group delay dispersion in the pulse-shaping setup can further reduce HOM visibility. The measured inter-pair visibility of ~44% leaves open how well independent sources would perform in actual multi-photon interference experiments once fabrication differences and dispersion are fully accounted for. Finally, scaling beyond four bins toward the proposed C4C_40 grid of 32 Schmidt modes requires pump spectra with tens-of-femtoseconds pulse durations, whose feasibility within the current closed-loop shaping architecture remains untested.

Conclusion

The work establishes a single-pass, filter-free route to polarisation–frequency hyperentanglement at telecom wavelengths, with dynamically tunable dimensionality achieved purely by reprogramming the pump shaper. The combination of fidelities above 99% per bin, concurrences above 98%, and a 90% spectral-entanglement visibility — together with symmetry-resolved HOM evidence of genuine hyperentanglement — makes this source directly relevant to dense wavelength-division multiplexed quantum networks, single-copy entanglement distillation, and high-dimensional resource-state generation. The main outstanding question is whether the demonstrated shaping fidelity can be preserved as bin count and grid complexity increase under broader pump bandwidths.
