Abstract: While the conducting CuO2 planes in cuprate superconductors have been widely recognized as a crucial component in producing high superconducting Tc, recent experimental and theoretical studies on Ba2−xSrxCuO3+_\deltahavealsodrawnmuchattentiontotheimportanceofCu−Ochainsinone−dimensional(1D)cuprates.TobetterunderstandthecupratescontainingCu−Ochains,herewehavestudiedtheelectronic,magnetic,andphononpropertiesofSr_2CuO_3bulkandfilmsbasedonthespin−polarizeddensityfunctionaltheorycalculations.WefirstreproducedthetypicalMottinsulatorfeatureofthecuprateparentcompoundforbulkSr_2CuO_3,andthenbuiltaSr_2CuO_3thinfilmwithCu−Ochainsexposedonthesurfacetodirectlyinvestigatetheircharacteristics.Differentfromtheinsulatingbulkphase,theSr_2CuO_3surfaceshowsinterestingmetallicproperties.Furtherelectronicstructurecalculationsrevealtheexistenceofspin−polarizedelectrongasbetweensurfaceSratomsthatstronglydependsontheinterchaincouplingofCuspins.Moreover,thephononmodesthatinvolvethevibrationsofin−chainandout−of−chainOatomscaninducestrongchargeandspinfluctuationsinthesurfacelayerofSr_2CuO_3film,whichsuggestssignificantmultipledegree−of−freedomcouplingsthatmaybeimportantforthesuperconductivityin1Dcuprates.OurworkprovidesacomprehensiveviewpointofthepropertiesofCu−OchainsinSr_2CuO_3$, facilitating a complete understanding of 1D cuprate superconductors.
