Quantity and quantitative properties in physics and metrology (2404.04294v1)
Published 4 Apr 2024 in physics.class-ph and hep-ph
Abstract: I discuss various aspects of the concept of a quantity in physics and metrology and related consideration in reference documents of IUPAP, IUPAC, ISO, IEC, and JCGM.
- The International System of Units (SI) (the so-called SI Brochure of The Metre Convention), https://www.bipm.org/utils/common/pdf/si-brochure/SI-Brochure-9-EN.pdf.
- JCGM 200:2012 International vocabulary of metrology – Basic and general concepts and associated terms (VIM) (of JCGM), the pdf file is accessible at https://www.bipm.org/en/committees/jc/jcgm/publications.
- JCGM 100:2008 Evaluation of measurement data – Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (the so-called GUM of JCGM), the pdf file is accessible at https://www.bipm.org/en/committees/jc/jcgm/publications.
- ISO publish their numerous Quantities & Units as commercial editions, files of which are not available on-line. Part of them are published as joint documents of ISO & IEC (that is related to the ISO/IEC 80000 series). (For a list of Quantities & Units see: https://www.iso.org/files/live/sites/isoorg/files/archive/pdf/en/quantity1993-en.pdf.)
