Breaking the intensity-bias degeneracy in line intensity mapping

Published 2 Sep 2022 in astro-ph.CO and astro-ph.GA | (2209.01223v1)

Abstract: Line intensity mapping is rapidly gaining prominence as a tool to understand galaxy evolution and cosmology at high redshift. However, the standard power spectrum analysis for these surveys suffers from a tight degeneracy between the overall mean line intensity and the bias of the emitting galaxies. We outline a new formalism for the Voxel Intensity Distribution (VID), a one-point statistic which is known to contain information beyond the power spectrum. We use this new calculation to show for the first time that the VID can be used to break this key degeneracy in intensity mapping data.
