Polynomials and the exponent of matrix multiplication

Published 15 Jun 2017 in math.AG | (1706.05074v1)

Abstract: We define tensors, corresponding to cubic polynomials, which have the same exponent ω\omega as the matrix multiplication tensor. In particular, we study the symmetrized matrix multiplication tensor sMnsM_n defined on an n×nn\times n matrix AA by sMn(A)=trace(A3)sM_n(A)=trace(A3). The use of polynomials enables the introduction of additional techniques from algebraic geometry in the study of the matrix multiplication exponent ω\omega.
