Validate contact perception in heterogeneous tissue

Establish whether the B-mode ultrasound contact-detection and contact-localization framework remains reliable in heterogeneous tissue with variations in tissue contrast, acoustic shadowing, deformation, and imaging parameters.

Background

The paper introduces a B-mode ultrasound method that detects probe–tissue contact and estimates the effective contact location along a curved ultrasound probe, then uses that estimate in a contact-aware impedance controller. The reported experiments are conducted on a flat, homogeneous agar phantom under controlled conditions.

The authors explicitly identify heterogeneous tissue as an unresolved validation setting. Variations in tissue contrast, acoustic shadowing, deformation, and imaging parameters could affect both the experimentally selected contact-detection threshold and the estimated contact location. Establishing reliability under these conditions is necessary before extending the method from the agar-phantom experiments to more realistic phantoms and biological tissue.

Performance in heterogeneous tissue remains unverified: variations in tissue contrast, acoustic shadowing, deformation, and imaging parameters may affect both the contact-detection threshold and the estimated contact location.
