Security proofs for arbitrary quantum channels

Develop security proofs for arbitrary quantum channels in continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocols based on displacement receivers, including a parameter-estimation procedure that does not rely on the Gaussian channel model.

Background

The paper analyzes a binary continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol using displaced thermal states and displacement receivers under an entangling-cloner collective attack. Its security analysis assumes a specific Gaussian thermal-loss channel, which permits the authors to derive Eve’s conditional states and estimate the channel parameters from photon-number-resolving detection data.

The authors explicitly identify this channel-model assumption as restrictive. For arbitrary quantum channels, the current parameter-estimation method would no longer be directly applicable because it depends strongly on the Gaussian model. The unresolved problem is therefore to establish a model-independent security proof for displacement-receiver CV-QKD and to redesign parameter estimation for that general setting.

An important research direction is the development of security proofs for arbitrary quantum channels, which remains an open problem for the displacement receiver.
