Rapid and reliable detection of small wildfires

Improve the WFDroneBench wildfire-monitoring framework and associated sensor-placement and drone-routing strategies to detect small wildfires rapidly and reliably.

Background

WFDroneBench evaluates ground sensors, charging-station placement, and drone-routing strategies for proactive wildfire detection using semi-synthetic wildfire-spread scenarios. The benchmark results identify small-fire detection as a key unresolved challenge, indicating that the evaluated approaches do not yet ensure sufficiently rapid and reliable detection for small ignition events.

The challenge is particularly important because early detection is intended to limit wildfire growth and damage, while small fires may be difficult for spatially sparse sensors and risk-focused drone routes to identify promptly. Addressing it may require improvements to sensing coverage, routing policies, or the representation of ignition risk, but the paper explicitly leaves the challenge unresolved rather than specifying a definitive solution.

Finally, our results reveal two key open challenges: (i) detecting small fires rapidly and reliably, and (ii) improving risk-map prediction, where the gap between ground-truth ignition patterns and available risk maps highlights a significant opportunity for ML innovation.
