Background

The study quantifies human skin-cancer mortality associated with altered surface ultraviolet radiation after regional and global nuclear-war scenarios. It notes that the same ultraviolet changes could affect animals and plants, including species important for agriculture, but that these consequences are outside the present analysis. Quantifying them would extend the assessment from human health to the broader ecological and agricultural effects of nuclear-war-induced atmospheric disruption.
