Physical driver of little red dot number-density evolution

Determine the physical mechanism responsible for the observed decline in the comoving number density of little red dots toward lower redshift.

Background

The paper combines its intermediate-redshift VIPERS measurements with results from other surveys and finds that the comoving number density of little red dots decreases substantially with cosmic time. Although the decline is observationally supported, the authors do not identify what physical process drives it.

Understanding this driver is important for distinguishing whether little red dots represent a short-lived phase of rapid supermassive-black-hole growth, an accretion-geometry state, a composite AGN–starburst phase, or multiple physically distinct populations.
