Possible task-set preference for Mingbird’s mechanisms

Determine whether the LRAB task set systematically favors Mingbird’s mechanisms, particularly flat prefill, finish gates, loop detection, and related small-model safeguards, rather than providing harness-neutral evidence of performance.

Background

LRAB was designed and implemented by the same researchers who developed Mingbird, and its tasks were intentionally constructed to exercise the failure forms targeted by Mingbird’s mechanisms. This design supports controlled causal comparisons within the benchmark but creates a risk that the task distribution rewards Mingbird’s architecture disproportionately.

An independent external benchmark is provided as a mitigation, but the paper does not establish that the LRAB results would remain unchanged under a benchmark designed independently of Mingbird. Resolving this issue requires evaluation on additional independently constructed task suites or a prospective benchmark design that does not encode Mingbird’s target failure forms.

References

We cannot rule out that the task set favors our harness's mechanisms; indeed, it was designed to exercise the failure forms in Section~\ref{sec:mechanisms}, which is the point of a controlled experiment but also its bias.
