Lanthanide dependence of magnetism and superconductivity

Characterize how the identity of the lanthanide ion affects the interplay among local-moment magnetism, superconductivity, and hole doping in infinite-layer nickelates.

Background

The study focuses on La-based infinite-layer nickelates because La has no 4f moments, allowing the measurements to isolate the role of Ni moments. The proposed multiorbital explanation nevertheless involves hybridized lanthanide-derived electronic states, whose properties can vary substantially across different lanthanide ions.

The authors explicitly identify the lanthanide dependence of the coupled magnetic, superconducting, and doping phenomena as unresolved. This question is motivated by the possibility that changes in lanthanide-derived electron pockets or their hybridization with Ni orbitals modify the RKKY interaction and thereby alter the glassy magnetic response.
