Investigation of Rephrasing Relations in Bipolar Argument Structures

Investigate rephrasing relations when modeling bipolar argument structures derived from Inference Anchoring Theory annotations, extending beyond the support and attack relations examined in the study.

Background

The paper converts Inference Anchoring Theory annotations into bipolar argument structures containing argument units connected by support or attack relations. The source corpora also contain a third relation type, rephrasing, which can be preserved by the data-processing pipeline together with speaker and dialogical-act information.

The experiments exclude rephrasing relations from the modeled structures. The authors explicitly defer their investigation to future work, leaving unresolved how rephrasing relations should be incorporated into computational argument structure prediction and how their inclusion may affect modeling and evaluation.

In this study we do not explore rephrasing relations when modeling our argument structures, and leave the investigation for future work.
