Background

The paper frames electromagnetic identification of the sources contributing to the nanohertz gravitational-wave background as a major unresolved problem in supermassive-black-hole-binary astrophysics. Galaxy mergers are expected to bring supermassive black holes to sub-parsec separations, where bound binaries can form and emit gravitational waves detectable in aggregate by pulsar-timing arrays. Electromagnetic variability, including periodic modulation of accretion luminosity, offers a possible means of associating individual active galactic nuclei with this population.
