Generalization of the Type-II algebra construction to arbitrary spacetimes

Determine to what extent gravitationally dressing observables to an observer’s worldline produces a Type II algebra, rather than the Type III algebra typically encountered in quantum field theory, for arbitrary spacetime backgrounds.

Background

The paper establishes the Type-II character of the observer-dressed algebra in the de Sitter example, where the static-patch time flow and the Bunch–Davies state provide special geometric and thermal structures. It then asks whether these results extend beyond de Sitter space to arbitrary globally hyperbolic backgrounds.

This problem is significant because the proposed algebraic notion of background-independence depends on the possibility of constructing a common algebraic framework whose representations can describe different spacetime backgrounds. Establishing the generalization would clarify whether the Type-II structure, together with its associated trace and entropy, is a generic consequence of gravitational dressing or a special feature of de Sitter space.

To what extent these results generalize to arbitrary spacetime backgrounds, remains an open question.
