Generalization and persistence of aggregate social-information effects

Determine whether the effects of controversy and group-certainty displays on moral judgment generalize to other populations and platforms and persist after repeated exposure.

Background

The study measures immediate responses to controlled summaries among a predominantly English-speaking sample evaluating English-language Reddit dilemmas. Participants saw concise displays rather than the richer combination of comments, rankings, and engagement cues available on online platforms, and the experiment did not compare social-information summaries with substantive arguments.

The authors explicitly identify uncertainty about external validity and durability. They propose replication with more diverse content and samples, more platform-like displays, comparisons with argument-based deliberation, and longitudinal designs to test whether changes persist.

Second, the present design establishes immediate responses to controlled aggregate summaries in this sample; it does not establish whether the effects generalize to other populations and platforms or persist after repeated exposure.
