Generality of unconventional adsorption modes

Determine how general unconventional adsorption modes, including cyanopolyyne interactions with interstellar ice surfaces, are and how strongly they affect subsequent surface chemistry.

Background

Quantum-chemical studies have identified unusual interactions between reactive species and interstellar ice, including chemisorption of carbon atoms and hemibonding of CN radicals. Such interactions can stabilize intermediates or redirect reaction pathways toward oxygen- or nitrogen-bearing molecules.

It remains unresolved whether these modes are exceptional cases or widespread processes relevant to interstellar chemistry.

How general are these unusual adsorption modes? For example, how do cyanopolyynes interact with interstellar ice surfaces, and how does this affect their surface chemistry?
