General equivalence of on-shell and off-shell entropy methods

Prove the equivalence between the on-shell first-law method and the off-shell conical method for entanglement entropy for arbitrary geometries and field theories.

Background

The paper derives an on-shell expression for quantum-matter entanglement entropy by integrating the first law along a family of equilibrium backgrounds and compares it with the off-shell replica or conical construction. The equivalence is demonstrated explicitly for the static patch of de Sitter space and for the non-rotating BTZ black hole, including the non-minimal-coupling contact term.

The authors do not establish that the agreement persists for arbitrary spacetime geometries and matter theories. A general proof is identified as the principal unresolved problem, with possible extensions involving charged or rotating black holes and higher-derivative gravity mentioned separately.

References

Several open questions remain. The most important is a general proof of the equivalence between the on-shell and off-shell methods for arbitrary geometries and field theories. While we have checked the equivalence in two examples, a general proof would be desirable.
