Small-scale operation of hierarchical assembly

Determine to what extent merger-driven hierarchical assembly processes analogous to those operating in massive galaxy halos occur at the much smaller mass scales of dwarf galaxies.

Background

The paper places the formation of the Milky Way halo in the context of hierarchical structure formation, in which smaller systems merge to form larger galaxies. Although this framework is well established for massive halos, the authors identify uncertainty about whether comparable processes operate efficiently in low-mass dwarf galaxies. This issue motivates searches for extended stellar structures and substructures that could preserve evidence of dwarf–dwarf mergers or tidal evolution.

References

While hierarchical assembly scenario is well established on the scale of the MW halo, it remains unclear to what extent similar processes operate at much smaller mass scales.
