Explain the divergence between historical and contemporary Force Concept Inventory results

Determine the reason why students at University A were substantially more successful on Force Concept Inventory Questions 15 and 16, particularly in pre-instruction testing, than the students represented in the early published Force Concept Inventory data.

Background

The paper compares five years of recent data from University A with the early Force Concept Inventory results reported by Hestenes et al. The recent cohorts performed considerably better on both car–truck questions, especially before instruction. The paper identifies several possible explanations, including differences in student level, national educational systems, elapsed time, and teaching methods, but does not establish which factor or combination of factors accounts for the discrepancy.

The reason for this is unknown but possible factors include the different level of the students (and therefore different previous exposure to Newtonian Mechanics instruction), the different country and therefore educational system in which the work took place (UK vs US) and the fact that around 30 years had elapsed between the two studies; it is possible that changes in teaching methods have evolved in this time, leading to improved conceptual understanding.

The generally similar results from Universities B-F gives an early indication that the results presented have widespread applicability, though the reasons for the high pre-test performance from students in this group is not known.
