Background

Sub-filaments are embedded in larger filamentary systems and therefore experience both coherent matter transport along the parent filament and strong, directionally organized tidal fields. These environmental effects may produce evolutionary behavior distinct from that of parent or isolated filaments.

The paper leaves unresolved whether the surrounding inflows primarily sustain sub-filaments by supplying matter or instead destabilize and destroy them through tidal interactions. Answering this question would clarify the physical processes governing the persistence and transformation of sub-filamentary structures.
